You have already learned the basics of how to work with Buckram at the Millinery for Beginners workshop.
Now you are ready to up-skill and learn how to add fabric on the front and back of a shaped headpiece.
You can select any of the disc-shaped blocks (No. 7, No.7b as shown in the picture or the 15" wide No.12 block) and I will show you how to cleverly attach the fabric to the underside, so it is smooth with no creases!
Once you have learned how to master this skill you can use any fabric to create a stunning and impactful headpiece.
Time permitting you can learn how to use Buckram and fabric combined to make a twist, loop or bow to finish your piece.
Yes basic materials, or structure materials such as Sinamay, Buckram of fabric are included. However Felt, Straw or Jinsin must be ordered especially for you. Extras such as trimmings, feathers, buttons are charged extra. Usually people spend from €5 to €15 on extras.
10am until 4/4.30pm
The workshop may finish slightly earlier or later depending on progress.
The studio will open no earlier than 9.50am where you are welcome to settle in with a tea/coffee.
Balance must be paid on arrival. You can pay by PayPal in advance if you wish. Cash or Cheque are both acceptable, I also have SumUp which can take credit/debit cards and issue you a receipt to your phone. Unfortunately I cannot take payments over the phone at this time.
If you decide to buy a Hat block and/Trimmings, the minimum transaction on Sum Up is €40. Extra trimmings can be paid for in cash as it is usually small amounts such as €10/€15.
Depending on the workshop that you will be attending, but yes generally basic sewing skills are essential as we will be attaching wire, binding etc.
I will show you some hints, shortcuts and tips on stitches used in Millinery.
Scissors, needles, thread etc are provided at the studio. You may want to bring an apron along to avoid snagging clothing.
Also if you want to make a piece to complement an outfit for a special occasion please make sure to bring it along as colours are hard to remember! If you collect buttons, old jewellery or trimmings they may be useful, so bring them along too.
You can find directions below, or I am on Google Maps.
Follow directions for Abbeyleix, Co. Laois.
The studio is at: Heritage House, Ballyroan Road, Abbeyelix, Co. Laois, R32 H244.
There is an upper and lower entrance to Heritage House. If you park at the upper Car Park, take the steps down following the signs for Creative Space Studio.
Lunches are not included.
You may certainly bring lunch with you.
If travelling from the South you may pass through Durrow. I would highly recommend Bowes Foodhall to buy some lunch. They are an award winning coffee shop.
In Abbeyleix you will find a wonderful selection of food at the Gallic Kitchen. Through the main traffic lights, it’s on the same side as Bank of Ireland. For a great cup of coffee and pastries or scones, Mueller and O Connell bakery is a 4-minute walk from Heritage House.
As places are limited and people have generally booked places some months in advance, and also it takes a lot of organising at this end! The answer is YES BUT I require 2 WEEKS NOTICE so that I can fill the workshop space.
Notice given 1 week or less means that you will lose your deposit unless there is a space on another workshop, which I will do my best to find for you. The deposit is non-transferable for use on Hat Blocks.
